Cytomegalovirus
Howdy.
My name is CMV.
Herpesviridae is my family.
My primary illness can look alot like my cousin EBV and sometimes we get confused for each other.
You may not even notice me at all.
I cause lots of problems in people with weak immune systems.
My primary illness in pregnant mothers stops babies from developing properly before they are born.

Another reason to love this blog. One of my students just gave a wonderful speech on CMV. She was infected (unknowingly) whilst pregnant. The doctors didn't know, as she had no symptoms, until her fetus stopped growing. He was delivered four weeks early. She graciously shared her experiences with us in her research talk this week. She counts her son and her family as the "lucky ones", as her son doesn't seem to have permanent hearing damage, and is only slightly mentally/physically challenged.
Even as a microbiologist, I was unaware of the long-term effects of congenital CMV. Thanks again for your site. My students have commented positively on several occasions.
